Research Roundup: Survey finds many Americans struggle with healthy habits during the holidays

Christmas tree

As the holiday season envelops us in a flurry of joy and festivities, many Americans find it challenging to maintain their health amidst the whirlwind of activities. A recent survey conducted by The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center shed light on these struggles, revealing that a significant number of respondents confessed to lapses in healthy habits during this time of year.

The survey, administered by SSRS on behalf of The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center, involved 1,007 respondents across the United States. It unveiled compelling insights into how the holiday season impacts individuals' health routines. Among the noteworthy findings:

  • Overindulgence in Food: Two-thirds of participants admitted to overindulging in food, while nearly 45% took a break from regular exercise routines.
  • Fatigue and Time Constraints: More than half of the respondents reported feeling fatigued and having limited time for themselves, often due to constant holiday activities.
  • Increased Alcohol Consumption: A significant third of those surveyed acknowledged consuming more alcohol during the holiday period.

Dr. Barbara Bawer, a family medicine physician at Ohio State Wexner Medical Center, highlighted the domino effect of losing track of healthy habits during this time. "If one healthy habit drops off, it can affect other areas very quickly," Dr. Bawer noted.

To combat these challenges and maintain wellness during the holidays, Dr. Bawer offered practical advice:

  • Diet: Plan ahead by having a balanced meal that is high protein and low in carbs earlier in the day if you have an evening event so you don't overeat later. Choose favorite dishes mindfully and avoid excess calorie intake at multiple events.
  • Exercise: Attempt to stick to your regular exercise schedule, but be flexible if commitments arise. Engage in activities with family and friends that keep you moving.
  • Sleep: Maintain consistent sleep schedules even while traveling. Avoid excessive use of sleep aids like melatonin, which might disrupt natural sleep cycles.
  • Alcohol Consumption: Practice moderation and say no to excessive drinking. Stick to recommended limits and avoid drinking on an empty stomach. Remember to lots of water to stay hydrated.

Dr. Bawer emphasized the significance of making small, consistent changes to achieve health goals effectively.

This survey provides valuable insights into the struggles many face during the holiday season. By being mindful of these challenges and implementing Dr. Bawer's suggestions, individuals can navigate this festive time while prioritizing their health and well-being.
